Jamie sat alone in the field looking up at the clear night sky blazing with star light, a view he wouldn’t get from the city. This was why he chose to move here over the Memorial Day week-end, the start of the summer season was this past weekend. He had spent many summer’s here with his aunt Teresa, when he was old enough he’d work for her in her quilt shop and also learn to quilt, something his father was not thrilled with his sister teaching him, but he never tried to stop him from learning . The summer he turned eighteen had been the last year he’d come. Now seven years later he was back, and taking over his aunt’s shop. She had signed it over to him when she decided to retire and move to a senior center to be near her brother and friends.
“What are you doing?” Darren asked walking up to where Jamie was sitting. He dropped down and sat next to him. I’ve been looking for you for the past ten minutes.
“Just enjoying the evening,” Jamie said leaning in towards Him. “Growing up I spent a good deal of time right here looking up at these stars. I know it’s silly but I feel at home here.”
“I don’t think it’s silly,” Darren said putting his arm around Jamie and hugging him tight. “You felt safe here.”
“Yes I did. Even though my aunt was great to be with there were times, finding out that I was gay and wasn’t sure how she would react to the news.”
“Was she the first you told?” Darren asked kissing and nibbling Jamie’s earlobe. “I’m guessing she didn’t have too much of a problem with it. After all she gave you the quilt shop.”
“She never batted and eye, all though she was a bit upset that I didn’t trust her to tell her sooner.” Jamie said before letting out a soft moan. “As for my father he was more relieved.”
Darren pulled back and looked a Jamie, “What do you mean, relieved?” all though the two had been together for awhile he had never met Jamie’s dad, the subject just never came up.
“My father was thirty-one when I was born, and my mother was right around the same age. She really wasn’t interested in a child at that age, nor was she that interested in my dad. So I’ve never really met her, and I never saw my dad with anyone until I told him I was gay. That’s when I found out that all those summers spent here with my aunt was when he’d go out and meet someone.”
“Your father is gay?”
“No, he was afraid of influencing me so he never dated when I was around. When I told him I was gay I guess he figured it didn’t matter who he saw or how often, but I still never saw him with anyone.” Jamie fell silent for a bit and just leaned into Darren’s embrace. “Then he had his stroke and I got a job I didn’t really like and I just couldn’t leave to come out here every summer.” A slight breeze ruffled threw causing the tall summer grass to wave.
“As much as I would love to make love to you right here under the stars the thought of being charged with indecent exposure doesn’t sit well with me.” Darren said getting up. “So let’s head on back.” He offered a hand to help Jamie up and together they walked back to the house they were renting. Once there the clothes came off on their way to the bedroom where Darren was on top twice to Jamie’s once, but then Jamie always did preferred the bottom.

Darren woke the next morning to the sound of the alarm telling him it was time to start a new work week. Dragging himself out of bed and into the shower, dressed and out to the kitchen where Jamie had coffee made. Grabbing his travel mug and kissing Jamie he was out the door ready to begin his long ride back to the city and into work, lucky for him he had the late shift today.
Jamie had only a short walk to the shop to get ready for the day. He knew there would be those who would balk at a man running the shop, but had all ready found a bunch that remembered him from before and didn’t have a problem with him. The only thing that could be better was if Darren could find something local so they wouldn’t be apart during the week. As he got to the shop he noticed the café next door was still closed, and had the distinct look of being closed permanently. Jamie had been planning on lunches there; even though the food had not been all that good when He and Darren had been in there. Now what was he going to do, it was the only place in town. Unlocking the door he headed on inside and got things ready for the day. All through the day he heard comments about the closed café, the owner’s wife had recently passed away, and the café had been her passion.
Jamie stepped out and locked the door. His first full day had been eventful, he’d met some really nice people as well as a few he would really not want to see again, and probably wouldn’t, judging by their comments. He noticed as he passed by the café that a ‘for sale by owner’ sign had appeared during the day. He thought about Darren, and how much he missed him, as well as how much fun it would be, if Darren could buy the café. Then they wouldn’t have to be apart. Nice dream he thought and continued on home, alone.
When he woke the next morning thoughts of Darren and the café were still in his head as he made his morning tea and got ready for another day. A call from Darren helped brighten his day, he did not however mention the café, he wasn’t all that sure Darren would want to run the place. Still however the thought lingered, it lay at the back of his mind. Resurfacing every now and then, whenever Jamie wasn’t too preoccupied with running his shop, or thinking about Darren.
The week finally came to an end, and as he locked up for the night he was eager to get home. It had not been a very pleasant day and he just couldn’t wait for Darren to arrive. At twelve forty he woke, having fallen asleep in front of the TV. Jamie was up out of his chair and over in to Darren’s arms in a flash,
“Oh I’ve missed you.” Jamie said before kissing him. “I don’t like this being apart. I know we have to, for now, but still.”
“I know, I feel the same, it was along week without you to come home to.” Darren said caressing Jamie and hugging him tight. “I just can’t afford to quit my job just yet.”
“Let’s just enjoy this week end.” Jamie said wanting to change the subject. He didn’t want Darren to think he was blaming him. “Oh I do have to work tomorrow, but only till one.”
“That’s fine I plan to sleep in late tomorrow,” Darren said leading Jamie to the stairs and up to their room. “But I should be up and showered by then.” Making there way over to the bed, both pulling off their clothes and falling on to the bed, sex had been the plan, but sleep won out.
When Darren woke up he was annoyed with himself for having fallen asleep on Jamie; what he didn’t know was Jamie felt the same in reverse. Getting up he had a bite to eat and then headed out side and mowed the lawn, it being a little postage stamp size it didn’t take long, then headed in for a shower and was walking in the door of the quilt shop by one.
“Well this is a surprise,” Jamie said when he looked up and saw who it was. “I didn’t expect you to come here. And sorry about last night, guess I was more tired than I thought.”
“Same here,” Darren said looking around the shop for any customers before leaning in for a quick kiss. “I brought the car so we can head into Christopher Lake, go through some of the shops have an early dinner than head home for an early evening.”
“I think I like your plan. I’ll be through here in a couple minutes,” Jamie said stepping back behind the counter to finish closing out the day.
“I see the Café closed, not surprised, the food wasn’t really that good.” Darren said as he walked over and looked out the front window. “If I had the funds I’d be tempted to make a bit on it.”
“Should we make some inquiries?” Jamie said coming to stand by him. “We’ll need to stop at the bank on the way out of town; I have to make a deposit.”
“No, there’s no point, I could never afford it.” Darren said as they walked out and Jamie locked the door. With one final look at the café, Darren got in the car and they headed off to the bank.
