The Patchwork Cafe Part Two

Because of an early shift Darren left on Sunday night, which why Jamie had spent a sleepless night alone. Now as he made his way along the street he still felt alone and wanted so much for Darren to be here. He paused briefly outside the café before heading on into the quilt shop, but twenty minutes later he was back out in front of the café. This time he had his cell phone out and he was tapping in the number.

“Hello Mr. Scott,” Jamie said when he heard the man answer.  “This is Jamie Weaver, Teresa from the quilt shop next door nephew.”

“You’d be the one she gave the shop to.” Reese Scott said. “She told me all about you and your boyfriend who’s the chef. He want to buy my café?”

“Well that is sort of why I called.” Jamie said starting to lose his nerve. “Neither of us can buy the café, but I was wondering if you’d rent it to Darren?”

“I don’t know about that I’ll have to think about that and call you later in the week.” And he rang off.

“Well I tried.” Jamie said to himself as he pocketed his phone. He turn to go back into his shop and found his way blocked. “Aunt Teresa!”

“So, is this any way to run a business, standing out here on the phone?” she asked before noticing the for sale sign, “Oh, I figured he’d do that. His heart just wasn’t in it without her.”

“Business has been good, there’s only been a few who’ve had a problem with me running to place.” Jamie said as they went back inside.

“Narrow minded pin heads; they’re probably the same who ones gave me grief.” Teresa said looking around noting the subtle changes he had made.

“Oh, there was one who claims she was a partner and that by rights the shop was hers. She was here last Friday.” Jamie said moving over to the counter to get the paper the woman had forced him to take.”

“What,” Teresa said taking the paper from him and glancing it over. “Silly cow, I bought her out years ago.” She turned and started for the back of the store, but turn back towards him. “Have you cleaned upstairs or thrown anything out yet?”

"Haven’t touched anything up there.” Jamie said wondering what she was up to.

“Good.” Was all she said as she turned back and went into the back room and up the stairs.  He could hear her moving around upstairs. The front door chime drew his attention and he noticed the woman from last Friday was back, and not alone.

“Lee Brown of Mendez and Brown, my client states that as part owner she has legal rights to this place,” the guy said handing Jamie his card but before Jamie could respond his aunt was back down with documents clearly stating ownership. Lee Brown was a bit annoyed. He left with the woman following him. Putting and end to the whole business about ownership. Jamie then spent the rest of the day working in the shop as well as visiting with his aunt, who left on Thursday.  Reese Scott called Thursday afternoon and he wanted to meet with Jamie and Darren on Friday.  Jamie had to explain that Darren wouldn’t be back until late Friday night and asked if they could meet on Saturday. This was not possible Reese Scott was leaving Saturday morning, a last minute trip, so it would have to be Friday or wait a month. So Jamie said he would be able to meet with him, and have Darren on the phone, not the best solution, but it was what he had to work with.

~*~

Darren stared out at the night sky, it was pushing on towards one-thirty in the morning and he was dead tired. He’d taken Friday and Monday as vacation days giving him four days off. He could have just gone home and started out in the morning, but he wanted to surprise Jamie by letting him wake up with him, Darren lying next to him. Ten minutes later he was pulling up to the house they rented leaving his bag in the car. He headed up to the door unlocked it and silently slipped in and up to the bedroom, pulled off his clothes and climb into bed, he was out all most as soon as his head hit the pillow.

In the morning Jamie woke to the knowledge that he was not alone in bed, and started to panic until he saw it was Darren. He wanted to grab a hold of him and kiss him awake, but thought of him arriving late and therefore needing his sleep. So he quietly got out of bed and headed to the bathroom, taking the clothes he was going to wear with him.

Darren woke to the smell of coffee and rolled out of bed and headed down to the kitchen where he found Jamie getting ready to head out. He wrapped his arms around Jamie pulled him in tight.

“You don’t know how hard it was to not wake you when I found you in bed this morning.” Jamie said turning around in Darren’s arms so they could kiss. “It was a great start to the morning.”

“I wouldn’t have minded if you did, I took today and Monday of to give us more time together.” Darren said rubbing his hands on Jamie’s back, and wishing it were bare skin he was touching. “I could have caught up on sleep while you’re at the shop.”

“Well, no you couldn’t.” Jamie said stepping out of the embrace. “I hope you won’t get mad, but I call Mr. Scott, about the café, and asked him if he could rent to us.”

“Why would I be mad? I think it great idea.” Darren said as he pulled Jamie back into for a kissed him softly on the lips. “So what did he say?”

“Well at first he said he’d need to think about it, which was last Monday, then yesterday he called and said he wanted to meet today. I tried to get him to meet tomorrow, but he’ll be out of town. So I figured when I met with him I’d get you on the phone, but now that you are here… it will just be better, you’ll know what to ask .”

“Hay this will be new territory for me too.” Darren said, he didn’t want to let go of Jamie, but knew he’d have to, and so let go of him. “Where, and what time are we to meet with  him?”

“At the quilt shop at around one.” Jamie said looking at the clock. “Got to head out. “See you then.” he start to leave, but was stopped by Darren who pulled him for one last kiss.

~*~

After the initial introductions Darren and Reese Scott went to the café because the shop was having a busy afternoon, which kept Jamie busy right up till closing. He was going over the day’s receipts when Darren came in.

“How did it go, what did he say?”

Darren pulled him for a brief hug before stepping back, in case someone came in.

“He given me ninety days rent free to see if I can pull off running the place. His only request that I hire back all of the staff that wants to come back.”

“Well I guess that’s fair, and you’ll need a staff,” Jamie said, continuing with closing out for the evening. “Now what?”

“Well I’ve been on the phone to the rental agent for the apartment; I have to be out by June thirtieth. I’ve also talked Sara, my boss, whose life I’ve made so much easier with this news.”

“How does your quitting make her life easier?” Jamie cut in. as he took the money out of the till and placed it in deposit folder.

“Because she’d been told to trim staff, so it was either Aaron, or me. This way I get severance pay. Now lock up, and will swing by the bank before heading out for dinner.”

~*~

The fourth of July dawned, bright and warm, the perfect day for the street fair and parade. Darren, with Jamie’s help set up a table out front of the newly named Patchwork Café. Darren, along with Will and Amy, two of the returning staff  would be serving up Sandwiches to customers at the fair as well as handing out samples off the new menu along with answering question regarding the grand reopening the following Monday.

Jamie had his own table, with ninety-nine cent fat quarters, baskets of thread, one for machine and one for hand quilting as well as a few kits featuring red, white and blue fabric. The big draw at his table was the quilt raffle to be held at the end of the fair.

Darren’s samples went fast as many said they would be coming in when it opened next week, if the sandwich sale were anything to go by, he was going to do just fine.

~*~

A year after his wife had died so did Reese Scott, leaving the Café to Darren and Jamie in his will. A portrait Of the Scotts was hung in the dining area of the café, with a patchwork frame of course.

The Patchwork Cafe

Jamie sat alone in the field looking up at the clear night sky blazing with star light, a view he wouldn’t get from the city. This was why he chose to move here over the Memorial Day week-end, the start of the summer season was this past weekend. He had spent many summer’s here with his aunt Teresa, when he was old enough he’d work for her in her quilt shop and also learn to quilt, something his father was not thrilled with his sister teaching him, but he never tried to stop him from learning . The summer he turned eighteen had been the last year he’d come. Now seven years later he was back, and taking over his aunt’s shop. She had signed it over to him when she decided to retire and move to a senior center to be near her brother and friends.

“What are you doing?” Darren asked walking up to where Jamie was sitting. He dropped down and sat next to him. I’ve been looking for you for the past ten minutes.

“Just enjoying the evening,” Jamie said leaning in towards Him. “Growing up I spent a good deal of time right here looking up at these stars. I know it’s silly but I feel at home here.”

“I don’t think it’s silly,” Darren said putting his arm around Jamie and hugging him tight. “You felt safe here.”

“Yes I did. Even though my aunt was great to be with there were times, finding out that I was gay and wasn’t sure how she would react to the news.”

“Was she the first you told?” Darren asked kissing and nibbling Jamie’s earlobe. “I’m guessing she didn’t have too much of a problem with it. After all she gave you the quilt shop.”

“She never batted and eye, all though she was a bit upset that I didn’t trust her to tell her sooner.” Jamie said before letting out a soft moan. “As for my father he was more relieved.”

Darren pulled back and looked a Jamie, “What do you mean, relieved?” all though the two had been together for awhile he had never met Jamie’s dad, the subject just never came up.

“My father was thirty-one when I was born, and my mother was right around the same age. She really wasn’t interested in a child at that age, nor was she that interested in my dad. So I’ve never really met her, and I never saw my dad with anyone until I told him I was gay. That’s when I found out that all those summers spent here with my aunt was when he’d go out and meet someone.”

     “Your father is gay?”

“No, he was afraid of influencing me so he never dated when I was around. When I told him I was gay I guess he figured it didn’t matter who he saw or how often, but I still never saw him with anyone.” Jamie fell silent for a bit and just leaned into Darren’s embrace. “Then he had his stroke and I got a job I didn’t really like and I just couldn’t leave to come out here every summer.” A slight breeze ruffled threw causing the tall summer grass to wave.

“As much as I would love to make love to you right here under the stars the thought of being charged with indecent exposure doesn’t sit well with me.” Darren said getting up. “So let’s head on back.” He offered a hand to help Jamie up and together they walked back to the house they were renting. Once there the clothes came off on their way to the bedroom where Darren was on top twice to Jamie’s once, but then Jamie always did preferred the bottom.

~*~

Darren woke the next morning to the sound of the alarm telling him it was time to start a new work week. Dragging himself out of bed and into the shower, dressed and out to the kitchen where Jamie had coffee made. Grabbing his travel mug and kissing Jamie he was out the door ready to begin his long ride back to the city and into work, lucky for him he had the late shift today.

Jamie had only a short walk to the shop to get ready for the day. He knew there would be those who would balk at a man running the shop, but had all ready found a bunch that remembered him from before and didn’t have a problem with him. The only thing that could be better was if Darren could find something local so they wouldn’t be apart during the week. As he got to the shop he noticed the café next door was still closed, and had the distinct look of being closed permanently. Jamie had been planning on lunches there; even though the food had not been all that good when He and Darren had been in there. Now what was he going to do, it was the only place in town. Unlocking the door he headed on inside and got things ready for the day. All through the day he heard comments about the closed café, the owner’s wife had recently passed away, and the café had been her passion.

Jamie stepped out and locked the door. His first full day had been eventful, he’d met some really nice people as well as a few he would really not want to see again, and probably wouldn’t, judging by their comments. He noticed as he passed by the café that a ‘for sale by owner’ sign had appeared during the day. He thought about Darren, and how much he missed him, as well as how much fun it would be, if Darren could buy the café. Then they wouldn’t have to be apart. Nice dream he thought and continued on home, alone.

When he woke the next morning thoughts of Darren and the café were still in his head as he made his morning tea and got ready for another day. A call from Darren helped brighten his day, he did not however mention the café, he wasn’t all that sure Darren would want to run the place. Still however the thought lingered, it lay at the back of his mind. Resurfacing every now and then, whenever Jamie wasn’t too preoccupied with running his shop, or thinking about Darren.

The week finally came to an end, and as he locked up for the night he was eager to get home. It had not been a very pleasant day and he just couldn’t wait for Darren to arrive. At twelve forty he woke, having fallen asleep in front of the TV. Jamie was up out of his chair and over in to Darren’s arms in a flash,

“Oh I’ve missed you.” Jamie said before kissing him. “I don’t like this being apart. I know we have to, for now, but still.”

“I know, I feel the same, it was along week without you to come home to.” Darren said caressing Jamie and hugging him tight. “I just can’t afford to quit my job just yet.”

“Let’s just enjoy this week end.” Jamie said wanting to change the subject. He didn’t want Darren to think he was blaming him. “Oh I do have to work tomorrow, but only till one.”

“That’s fine I plan to sleep in late tomorrow,” Darren said leading Jamie to the stairs and up to their room. “But I should be up and showered by then.” Making there way over to the bed, both pulling off their clothes and falling on to the bed, sex had been the plan, but sleep won out.

When Darren woke up he was annoyed with himself for having fallen asleep on Jamie; what he didn’t know was Jamie felt the same in reverse. Getting up he had a bite to eat and then headed out side and mowed the lawn, it being a little postage stamp size it didn’t take long, then headed in for a shower and was walking in the door of the quilt shop by one.

“Well this is a surprise,” Jamie said when he looked up and saw who it was. “I didn’t expect you to come here. And sorry about last night, guess I was more tired than I thought.”

“Same here,” Darren said looking around the shop for any customers before leaning in for a quick kiss. “I brought the car so we can head into Christopher Lake, go through some of the shops have an early dinner than head home for an early evening.”

“I think I like your plan. I’ll be through here in a couple minutes,” Jamie said stepping back behind the counter to finish closing out the day.

“I see the Café closed, not surprised, the food wasn’t really that good.” Darren said as he walked over and looked out the front window. “If I had the funds I’d be tempted to make a bit on it.”

“Should we make some inquiries?” Jamie said coming to stand by him. “We’ll need to stop at the bank on the way out of town; I have to make a deposit.”

“No, there’s no point, I could never afford it.” Darren said as they walked out and Jamie locked the door. With one final look at the café, Darren got in the car and they headed off to the bank.

Little Bit Tales - New Beginnings

Sorry to everyone who read these stories, For some reason it didn't post this morning. So here it is now the third Little Bit Tales - New Beginnings

Devon sat on the edge of the bed feeling down. Everything had been going good until yesterday, his position had been eliminated and he was out of work. He had been there five years, and put in a lot of long days, with no overtime, and that was the thanks he got, ‘sorry, budget cuts’. John, the guy he shared an apartment with said, ‘If you can’t pay rent you got to go’. Devon felt movement behind him and Tom’s arms came around him and hugged him.

“Sorry didn’t mean to wake you.” Devon said as Tom nibbled on his ear lobe. “I just couldn’t sleep anymore.”

“Stop worrying about a job.” Tom said running his fingertips over Devon’s bare chest. “I told you, come move in with me. We’ve been seeing each other for the past seven months and you’ve been here almost every weekend. Now would be the perfect time to move.”

“And just what would I do for work?” Devon said leaning back against Tom. “Otter Creek is not a large place; there aren’t a lot of job opportunities.”

Tom pulled Devon back on to the bed with him, “The best part about week-ends is the fact that you’re here. I wanted to wake up every morning with you right here.” He rolled them both so that Devon was on his back looking up at him. “Come on, move in with me, you can sit back and just relax and take your time, something is bound to come your way.” Devon was silent and looked away prompting Tom to ask, “Is there some reason you don’t want to move in with me?”

“No, of course not.” Devon said turning to look at Tom. “I just don’t want to be taking advantage of you; I don’t know when I’ll get another job.”

“Dev, will you just let me take care of you.” Tom said leaning down and kissing him first on the lips then on his chin. “Now what do you say we get dressed and go pack up your things.”

An hour later, Devon found himself sitting in the passenger seat of Tom’s pick-up on a forty minutes drive to Dewitt, to pack up his things and move in to Tom’s place. All though he loved Tom a lot, and wanted to move in with him, it still scared him to take such a big step, and was why his stomach was all tied up in knots. A new feeling, anger emerged when they got to the apartment he shared with John, who wasn’t there when they arrived, but left a note which informed Devon that he found someone who was interested in sharing. If he decided to move in, Devon could sleep on the sofa for fifty bucks a month.

“That’s my bed!” Devon squawked. Any qualms he had about moving out now gone. “I bought it when I moved in here.”

“Well then that will be the first thing we load into the pick-up.” Tom said. “Which is your room?”

It took right around an hour to pack up his room, while Tom went and rented a small trailer so they could get everything in one trip. He’d gone thru all the boxes Tom had grabbed from where he worked and Devon was busy filling up plastic bags with pillows, bedding and towels from the bathroom. He was wondering what he could use for the books and DVDs when Tom got back, who had the fore thought to pick up a few boxes from the rental place. At last everything was loaded up, and Devon left a short note for John along with his copy of keys, and they drove off.

When they got back Tom would have to head into work for a couple of hours, so they unloaded the trailer so it could be dropped off at a local office of the same rental company. Devon spent the time moving his things, the ones he could do on his own, and was just hooking up the fifty inch flat screen in the bedroom when Tom got back.

“Well, we certainly can’t miss seeing that screen.” Tom said coming up behind Devon and kissing him on the cheek. “Bet he’s going to miss that.”

“He called just a bit ago,” Devon said returning the kiss. Now that it was done and he was here it all felt, natural, like he belonged. “It seems the guy backed out when he found out the bed was gone.”

“Seriously, John thought you’d leave the bed behind.” Tom looked at him with such a shocked look. “How did you put up with him for four years?”

“I don’t know,” Devon said pulling up Tom shirt so he could run his fingers over Tom’s warm bare skin, with just a hint of hair. When they first started seeing each other Devon thought he had shaved or trimmed his hair, but no it was just a light coating. “He didn’t start out that way, but somewhere along the way he just became a jerk.”

“I think the phrase you’re looking for is dick head.” Tom said “And we don’t have time for this.” He said pulling his shirt down. “Ted and the twins are coming for dinner, remember.” Ted was Tom’s older brother and also Mayor of Otter Creek, his wife of three years wasn’t happy being in the small town and so she just up and left him, she had been gone now for a year.

“Oh right,” Devon said stepping back. “Suppose I should go get started on the salad and potatoes.” He started for the door and looked back, “But just you wait till tonight.”

After dinner Ted’s twins went to play in the backyard, while the three of them stayed up on the deck.

“Well I’m really sorry you lost your job, but glad you’re moving in with this guy.” Ted said taking the offered beer from Devon. “I know Otter Creek is going to seem awfully tame, I hope you’ll like it here.

“I’m sure I’ll will.” Devon said sitting down next to Tom. “Now if I could just find a new job.” Ted’s cell phone rang and he got up and stepped away to take the call.

“Nora, who works the post office, has to go to her sisters, because she’s taken ill and she’s going to take care of her.” Ted said coming back and sitting down. “Now I’m going to have to cover the post office for about a month. Would you be interested in temporary work?”

“What would I be doing?” Devon asked sitting forward. Temporary was better than nothing.

“Running the Post Office, you’d start at seven in the morning, when the mail arrives you’d sort it into the mail boxes and work the counter until one, Monday thru Friday.”

“I can do that.” Devon said. “I’m happy to help out, but who runs the post office on Saturday?”

“We don’t get Saturday mail, were too small to rate it.” Ted said. “Course if anyone wants it they have to drive to the main post office in Dewitt, but no one does.”

~*~

Devon pulled the door down and locked it than slipped under the counter onto the public side and pulled the half door shut and made sure it was locked. He couldn’t believe how fast the four weeks had past and that he was going to miss coming in.

Oh good, your still here.” Ted said coming in. “I’ve just found out that Nora isn’t going to come back, apparently her sister isn’t doing well, and will need long term care. So this job is yours if you want it.”

“Yes please, I’d like that.” Devon said without any hesitation. “Is there anything I need to do?”

“Just show for work next Monday, and have a great week-end.” Ted said before he left. Devon finished up and headed down to the café where he met Tom for lunch every Friday.

“Sorry I’m late, but your brother stopped by to tell me Nora wasn’t coming back and that the job was mine if I wanted it, I said yes.”

“And your ok with this, I know it was not a job you set out for.” Tom said. Glad that Devon seemed happy and content.

“Yes I am.” Devon said with a grin. “I’m so glad you talked me into coming, I had no idea how much stress I had in my life until it was gone.

"Well then to new beginnings.” Tom said toasting him with his coke. Devon toasted back.

Little Bit Tales - Jumping Ship

Hello Everyone
Here it is the second Little Bit Tale
Jumping Ship

Please take note that all characters, places and events are works of fiction created by the author.

The luxury starliner Wesson was in the Delta system at the fourth planet so its elite passengers could venture to the planet. Jayden Barnes, who had joined the crew after his mother passed away, has been working on the Wesson for the last four years. He sat in the back of the shuttle and waited till the last passenger, going on shore leave were off. Before he and any other crew member from the cruise ship got off. He didn’t go down planet side often, because he couldn’t always afford to do so. Most times he just stayed in his cabin and rested up. Still other times he just had to get off the ship, if just for a few hours. There was just something about this particular cruise that had him on edge; he couldn’t quite put his finger on it. The guest also seemed more demanding than usual. He wandered about open market booths; it felt good to be away from the constant vibration of the ship and to feel natural sun light. Looking at what was for sale to the tourist, most wasn’t worth what was being asked for it. It’s not that it wasn’t good quality, it was just the prices were all high. To find good quality items at lower prices you had to move out from the space docks, most tourists didn’t for fear of missing the returning shuttles. Jayden didn’t because he just didn’t have the funds, and after all it wasn’t like he was going to buy anything.

Hallam had come down to the planet last evening wanting to get away from the ship, the cruise had been a mistake and he wasn’t enjoying it the way he had hoped. The only bright spot for him had been one of the servers he simply knew as Jayden. He saw how a lot of his fellow passengers treated the serving staff; of course some of the staff weren’t that nice themselves. Jayden, however was nice he was always helpful and smiled, even when being yelled at for something beyond his control. The same Jayden he was now watching looking at robes, he had been watching him ever since he’d entered the marketplace. There was just something about him which made Hallam want to be around him. He walked over to the silken robes Jayden had been looking at and had even tried on pale blue one before putting it down having looked at the price. Hallam wasn’t sure why but he bought it and had the clerk hand it to him.

“It is a gift, from the gentleman,” the clerk said gesturing towards Hallam. Jayden thought he looked familiar and realized he was a passenger, a guest he had served onboard the Wesson. He was one of those passengers whose surname was hidden to hide who they were. He was also one of the nicer ones and he liked him, but still the rules he thought as he started towards him.

Hallam knew just exactly what Jayden would say and said before he could say a word, “You’re off duty and were not on the ship, so I say ship rules don’t apply here, besides all sales are final and the robe would never fit me.”

Jayden found Hallam’s smile very hard to resist, “Well than thank you.” Was all he could say because he was at a loss for words beyond this. He fought hard not to stare at the very attractive man. He knew he needed to say or do something and not just stand there.

“Good, now will you join me in a small bite to eat? It’s just lunch and I hate eating alone.” Hallam asked steering Jayden away from the booth and down the lane towards one of the marketplaces small café. He didn’t really give Jayden a chance to answer, because he was sure Jayden would have turned him down. They were seated at a table for two before Jayden had a chance to object. Hallam ordered for them and then thought to ask if Jayden would of preferred to order for himself.

“Yes normally, but then I’m usually by myself,” Jayden said with a bit of a smile. He knew he should not be here with Hallam, being that he was one of the cruise passengers. If they were seen he would be in trouble, but today he just didn’t seem to care. While they waited for their food to arrive Hallam told Jayden how he’d bought a second hand run-a-bout and was planning on leaving the cruise. “Oh I wished you wouldn’t.” the words were out of his mouth before he could stop them.

“I don’t blame you, it’s just I’ve lost interest in the cruise that’s all.” Hallam said as plates were set in front of both of them. They started eating in the silent’s being broken first by Jayden.

“I’ll miss seeing you; there are so very few things to look forward to onboard ship.” Jayden said. “But I understand why you want to leave. When I started four years ago I thought it would be more interesting, more exciting.

“Then perhaps, you should leave; find a new position something you really enjoy.” Hallam said. Of course he hadn’t a clue as to how easy or difficult this would be.

“That’s easy for you to say, you never…” Jayden said with a bit more hostel heat then he intended. He quickly curbed his mouth and looked down at his plate for several moments, “Sorry I didn’t mean_”

“Your right I don’t know, and I’m sorry,” Hallam said cutting Jayden off. He was afraid he had ruined any chance of spending any more time with Jayden, and the rest of the meal past in silence. Jayden had wanted to pay for his own meal, but Hallam said no it had been his idea and he did order for both. As they walked back out into the afternoon sun Jayden said he should think about going back to the ship. Hallam wasn’t ready to let him go so soon. “Come with me.” He said the words were out of his mouth before he knew it. Jayden just stared at him with wide eyes. “I can’t promise you much other than a bit of an adventure.”

“I, I can’t,” Jayden said as he began to breathe hard and fast. “Everything I own is on that ship. I can’t just up and leave… can I?”

“I’ll wait for you to go and collect your things,” Hallam said. This was really not how he expected Jayden to react and was glad Jayden seem open to the idea of coming with him.

*******

Jayden stood and looked about the room he’d called home for the last four years. He said to himself that this was mad, how could he just toss it all away to follow… someone he barely knew, but here he was all packed ready to just take the biggest leap of his life. He had everything to lose and still he felt this was the right move as he gathered up his bags and walked out of the room without looking back. He slipped unseen onto a shuttle off loading debris from the ship and made his way to where Hallam said to meet. There was a moment’s panic that he wouldn’t be there, but as he rounded the corner he saw Hallam standing there with a big smile and walked into his arms and a big hug.

A Review of Curiosity Killed Shaney

Curiosity Killed Shaney

        By J.C. Wallace

Shaney's curiosity is always getting him into trouble, including stumbling into a ritualistic circle and being imbued with an energy that will eventually tear him apart. He soon finds out that Hudson, a man he cares for deeply, might be responsible for his misfortune. Add in the betrayal by his best friend Todd and the desire of a demented occultist named Silas to control the energy inside of him and there seems to be no way out. Can Shaney find a way to rid his body of the nefarious energy before he dies a horrible death?

My Review

Last week I finished this book. And it was definitely a 5 star book with great characters. There were touches of humor tucked in around the twisting plot which gave a warm feel to the story and made you care what happen to Shaney, Hudson and Todd. My thanks to the author for not over playing the sex scene, they were balanced with the story.  And I look forward to her next book.

going audio

Hello Everyone

Lisa downloaded and installed text Aloud a texts to speech program which is proving to be quite helpful in editing as it reads my stories out loud. I can then find a lot of words that are either missing or the wrong word is used. It comes with a voice called, Anne but you can buy more natural sounding voices, and they are 45 dollars apiece.  Sure could have used this with Teddy, the first Little Bit Tales. As a lot was missed when it was proof read. I will be trying to line up someone different for the next installment.

Well off to writing have a good weekJ

Little Bit Tales - Teddy

Hello Everyone
Here it is the very first Little Bit Tale
Teddy

Please take note that all characters, places and events are fiction created by the author.

Tom Wilkes turned off of Squirrel rd. onto Walbri and followed along the dirt road passing by the half dozen driveways, these were not prime lakefront lots due to the fact that they were sixteen to twenty foot drop of wooded and brush hillside to the shoreline below. His brother, the youngest of three like living here. The dirt road ended and he stopped behind Teddy’s jeep. He looked past it out at the night sky over the lake lit briefly by a flash of lightening. Getting out of the patrol cruiser he felt the moist humid air and you could tell rain was coming. He walked around to the steps up to the deck which ran the length of the trailer.

“Come to check up on me?” Teddy asked in way of greeting his older brother. Tom looked in the direction the voice came from and saw the faint glow of Teddy’s e-reader.

“Sam thought you looked upset when you left work,” Tom said walking over and sat down next to his brother. “So, is there anything bothering you, everything ok with Jake?”
Sam was not only Teddy’s boss; he was also his older brother, Tom was the middle of three of them, and took over running the diner when their parents retired.
“He worries way too much, and there is nothing wrong,” Teddy said. “And before you ask, I didn't go with the guys because I’m not twenty one so I can’t drink, at least not in a bar, and half naked woman hanging on to poles isn't the same trill for me.”

“I’d better not catch you drinking for another year,” Tom said knowing full well Teddy most likely would at some point. “So what about Jake?”

“He sent a text that his flight was delayed so he’s going to be a lot later then he said.” Teddy said, sounding all down and depressed.

“Oh so that’s the problem, you want him here now.” Tom said with a bit of a chuckle. “So he’ll be here tomorrow then?”

“I guess so, if he’s still coming. It’s been six months since he was last here and then it was just for a few days. What if he found someone new, or better?” Teddy said. He flinched just a bit from the flash of lightening and the rubble of thunder telling them the storm was getting closer.

“Now you don’t really believe that, you've been talking every week, and he worked hard to win over Sam and me.” Tom said, than added getting up. “I've got to get back on patrol.” More flashing and rumbles. “You better make sure your ready for this storm, call if you need anything. And trust me Jake will be here tomorrow.” He turned and walked back to his cruiser, and he thought that if Jake screws this up and hurts Teddy, no place on earth will be far enough to escape him. He made it inside just in time, the skies open and poured down for a good forty minutes.
It was just past three in the morning when the semi came to a stop and Jake Russell got down from the cab, thanking the driver for the ride, shouldered his backpack and set off down Walbri as the truck driver continued on, to have taken a cab all the way from the airport would of cost way to much. So he’d made his way by hitching rides, the last was the semi driver. The rains during the night did not cool off; in fact it only became more humid and close. Jake was dead tired and couldn't wait to get home, which was anyplace Teddy was. He’d missed him so much and it was killing him to have been gone so long, but that was behind him now. The rain had turned the road into a muddy mess so he left his boots on the deck. Silently he entered the trailer, finding it even more humid and warm inside. Jake knew why Teddy didn't have the air on, but he was here now and would be helping with the bills. So he switched it on, and shut the few windows on the covered deck side. He slipped out of his clothes and stepped into the shower washing away the sweat and travel dust. Now standing by the bed looking down at the one person he loved most sleeping. He wanted to take Teddy in his arms and make mad passionate love, but fatigue from his journey had him settle for just laying down next to Teddy. He reached out and ever so softly caressed Teddy’s cheek, but that was as far as he got before falling asleep.

Teddy woke with daylight shining in around the closed louver blinds, the ones he’d left open when he went to bed. A clear indication that he was not alone, add to that the cool dry air indicating the air was on. Turning towards the doorway he could see the half naked man that was Jake, the love of his life. As much as he would have liked to just jump in and cover him with kisses, the fact that he’d no idea how long Jake had been a sleep had him slipping out of bed so as not to wake him up. Teddy’s joy at having Jake here was short lived when he found that Jake’s backpack was all the luggage he had. This meant a short visit like overnight, or possibly the whole week-end. Picking Jake’s clothes up of the bathroom floor he decided to make the most of the time he had with Jake. Showered and teeth brushed he went out and started a pot of coffee before grabbing his laptop and heading out onto the deck. It wasn't till he came out that he realized how cool it had been inside, but it was what Jake wanted so he left it and sat down and looked out through the trees at the shimmering waters. There was the slightest breeze which just might blow the clouds away. Making himself comfortable he set up the laptop and started in on his latest story. He liked writing his little stories, even if no one ever read them, because he never showed them to anyone. Lost in the story he was creating he didn't see Jake until he sat down next to him. Setting the laptop aside

“I’m so glad you’re finally here.” Teddy said as he straddled Jake and hugged him tight. Their lips met in a deep kiss, which ended in more hugging. And a soft silent’s fell over them in which both simply drank in the feel of being together again. “How long are you here, before you have to leave?” Teddy added.

“I don’t have to leave; I’m here for as long as you want me.” Jake said pulling a small box from his jeans pocket. The box contained a platinum band with the word forever etched into it. “Teddy Wilkes, will you be my forever mate, would you marry me?”

“Yes.” Was all Teddy could get out as tears began to well up in his eyes, as Jake slid the ring onto his finger followed by a kiss and hug, neither had noticed they weren't alone.

“Congrats lit’ bro.” Tom said standing next to Sam, who looked just a bit uncomfortable at the moment. “Come on let’s see this ring.” He added. Teddy got up and walked over to his brothers and was followed by Jake.

“Now I suppose you’re going to want time off to go to one of those state where it’s legal to get married.” Sam said as he gave his brother a hug.

“It had crossed my mind,” Teddy said, knowing there was no way he would want to without family there.

“If we make it close by will you come?” Jake asked, he didn't have any family to invite, so it was important that Teddy’s was there.

“I’m there.” Tom said. “Wherever it is.”

“Yeah I can shut down for a few days,” Sam said. “What about mom and dad? It’s legal in their state.”

“Your right, will plan on that.” Teddy said. “But right now I want to take my man back to bed for some private time, see you later.” And with that he took Jake’s hand and led him back inside.

Celebration of Life

Hello Everyone

Last Saturday we had a Celebration of Life for my brother Carl at the Royal Inn bar and grill, it was his favorite place. It was well attended by many of his friends and family. I’m not sure how the former Red Wing player fit in, he showed up after I had left, David was coming down to fix a small pluming problem so I didn’t see him.

He will be missed by all

Hello everyone

First I’d like to thank everyone for their condolences and prayers it meant a lot to me and my family.

Now picking up the pieces and moving on, back to the story. This section comes from near the end of When Your Lips Touch Mine, it's where they find Nick who had gone missing and yes all linked to the kidnapping of Skye, I told you this story took on a life of it's own.

“What about this missing deputy?” Lawrence asked as they started for the shoreline. “Any news on where… I think I found him.” he added looking down.

“Bloody hell, call 911, tell them we need and airlift,” Liam said climbing down to where Nick laid unconscious. He checked a pulse and found a steady one. He then started to untie him.

“There on their way should be about fifteen minutes,” Lawrence called down to him. “Anyone else I should call?”

“His brother, he’s staying at Maggie’s,” Liam said knowing she would have it all over the island before the airlift got here, but it couldn’t be helped, Chris needed to know.

“Oh lord.” Was all Lawrence said punching in the numbers and placing the call. He found it funny how he still remembered the number after all this time. “Do you need me to come down and help?”

“Don’t want to move him until the paramedic’s get here.” Liam said pulling the tape off his mouth as gently as he could.

After a couple of minutes Lawrence could hear the sound of feet running and looked to see both Maggie and Chris Morrow rounding the house and heading over to where they could see him, they were followed by three others. Maggie said they were in the café when the call came in and she ran them all out to get Chris here. In the distance they could hear the pounding beat of the approaching helicopter.

Chris did not like seeing his brother lay so lifeless, his first reaction was to get down to him and pick him up. Even though he knew the sheriff was right to wait for the paramedics. With nowhere to land it hovered over them and they came down on cables assets the injuries loaded him into a basket pulled him up and set off for the mainland hospital.

Maggie, sweetheart that she was handed Chris her car keys and told him where to find it in the parking lot on the mainland. The sheriff gave him directions to the hospital on the way to the ferry.

HCM 20213 Has a title

            Hello everyone

I’m very happy to say that HCM 20213 now has a title, When Your Lips Touch Mine the story was written last year, but only had its file number. Now it gets its title from a song, and no it’s not the song title.  I would never have heard the song if it hadn't been for RJ Scott, so thanks RJ.

I had mapped out the storyline on where I wanted it to go, but this story seem to have a mine of its own and when veering off in another direction. Characters are getting kidnapped; I think it’s so much better then what I had planned. It’s being revised as well as Merewood. Bouncing between the two stories, so you’ll get bits from both here, here’s one of the funnier typos found yesterday. The Character Nick Morrow, who has transferred to the San Huron Sheriff office and as a new deputy, has been assigned to Fawkes Island replacing Karl, who hates being assigned there.

HCM 20213 WYLTM-P7S2
Karl couldn't believe his good luck, and he was down to the dock waiting for the fairy to arrive.

As near as I can tell this the only time I made this error. Because it is spelled correctly Word doesn't have a problem with it, it’s too busy wanting me to change “are you into is you” and other silly things.

I’m afraid that’s all for now keeping it short because there are storm clouds gathering, what’s happen before will happen again all to soon I'm afraid.

HCM 20165-S,8 Merewood

Hello everyone
Sorry there wasn't a post last week, one of my co workers went into the hospital so I was call back to work early and that put me of track.
This is from Merewood scene, or paragraph 8 and has two of the four main characters, Hallam Silverton and Jayden Barnes. I know it's long but I'd like it if you would please read through it and let me know what you think.

With the ship now in flight Hallam went to find Jayden and found him in the main cabin, the bed had been made up into a sofa and Jayden sat on it looking out the portal at the emptiness of space. He all so noted his backpack and bag, crammed with everything he own it was a clear sign he wanted to leave at the first opportunity. When he asked Jayden to join him he gave no thought to going back for his clothes cause they would be easily replaced, Jayden however did go back to the ship packed his things and left with really no one seeing him go so officially neither had left the ship. “Jay, I’m sorry I should have been more clear about why we were landing there and I understand if you want to leave, and I’ll take you where ever you want to go, but first I want to take you to Jaconda, There’s a resort right on the ocean with miles of beaches where we can sit and have someone else wait on you.”
As mad as he was with Hallam he found he couldn’t stay mad for long, “To sit and be waited on sounds good, think I’d like that,” he said getting up and coming over to where Hallam was standing. “But Jaconda is kind of pricey, how are we going to manage that, I know I said I wanted adventure, but I also want it legal.”
“Don’t worry I’ve got it covered,” Hallam said and kissed him. At that point the cabin was plunged in to darkness then half light and the computer intoned “Warning main power off line eighteen hours of reserve.” Hallam turn away from Jayden and then back “I didn’t do this but I got to check this out.” He said and headed for the flight deck with Jayden right behind him, who stood back and let Hallam work, he wanted to know what had happen but didn’t want to be in the way, he also wished the computer would stop counting down.
“The power cells are drained, we have to find a planet to land on and fast.” He said looking at the controls.
“Is there anything I can do to help?” Jayden asked.
“Yes there’s a panel back in the main cabin go switch everything off and then come back here,” Hallam said without looking at him. “By keeping only power to the flight deck will buy us more time.”
Without a word Jayden did as he was told, located the panel and shut down power to the rest of the ship including environmental controls. Using his pen torch to light his way back to the flight deck just inside it he found the controls and triggered the bulkhead.
Hallam heard the hiss of it sealing and turned towards Jayden, “Good move, now sit down strap yourself in. I found a planet, but I can’t guarantee will still have maneuvering thrusters when we get there.”
Again Jayden did as he was told and was surprised at how calm he was. After a bit he was finding it hard to keep his eyes open or stay awake, that’s when he noticed Hallam getting out masks and handing one to him and showing him how to connect to the tank of air under his seat, as he started breathing from the tank his head began to clear.
At last the planet came into view most of the systems were off line and Hallam had open the forward port shield so they were seeing the ship pass through the atmosphere as opposed to using the view screen. The last thing Jayden saw before closing his eyes was skimming over treetops of a great forest waiting for the crash which didn’t seem to come.
Hallam had found a clearing where forest and mountain met and managed to bring the ship into a nice soft landing near a pool of water. He sat there for a moment in the dark, the power was all spent hence the darkness before getting up torch in hand and moving to the bulkhead and found the emergency release override then made his way to the airlock and got it opened. Sunlight and moist, humid air flowed in and he breathed in several lung full’s before going back into get Jayden, who hadn’t moved he was still sitting with his eyes closed, he seemed to be unconscious, Panicking he checked the air tank found it full and on. Hallam unfastened the straps and grabbed a hold of him and carried him out and laid him down on the mossy ground. Checking for a pulse he found one, and started shaking him trying to bring him around. Eventually he began to get a reaction from Jayden, Who’s eyes began to flicker open, and Hallam began to breathe easier, “You all right now?”
“I think so” Jayden finally managed to say; he felt weak and a bit weird, “What happen to me, where are we?”
“I think in the excitement you held your breath a little too long and knocked yourself out,” Hallam said. “I don’t think you should try and get up just yet.” He added when Jayden tired to sit up. “Just take it easy.”
“You didn’t say where we are,” Jayden said turning his head trying to look around.
“Haven’t a clue, I used the last of the sensors to see if it were breathable and non hostile environment,” He said looking about. “It’s definitely not the beaches of Jaconda.”

“No but it’s not bad either,” Jayden said finally managing to sit up.
